Jan. 25th, 2005 @ 03:24 pm Arrrrgh squirrels
Current Mood: annoyed
Okay, generally speaking I like squirrels, but the ones in my apartment complex are driving me NUTS.

I have all of these potted plants on my patio -- a couple of big ones (a hibiscus, an angel wing jasmine, a small gardenia, a HUGE aloe plant), and I used to have some small ones. I really love pansies -- they were my grandma's favorite flower, so I keep them around to remind me of my family, and because they're colorful and nice to look at. But these stupid squirrels have been EATING them all! I also have this really cool Hawaiian wedding flower vine that I got from the county fair last summer, and they keep digging it up and exposing its roots. The leaves are getting pretty battered, I'm worried that it's going to die. And the pansies are entirely gone. ARGH.

The squirrels are totally fearless, too. I think it's because we're in the middle of L.A. and they're used to being around people. But they won't even run away if I go out onto the patio... I have to bang on the wood with a broom to get their attention before they'll run away, and one of them I had to actually chase with the broom to get it to leave.

My brothers say they can loan me a pellet gun, but I don't want to hurt them, I just want them to stop killing my flowers. =P Oh, I had this "cherry sparkler" double impatien, too, but they ate that awhile ago as well. Stupid squirrels!

Jan. 21st, 2005 @ 02:49 pm Dim Sum
Current Mood: hungry
Oh, how I love dim sum. My favorite ones are the egg custard tarts, silken tofu with hot almond-ginger sauce, spare ribs with black bean sauce, and sticky rice in lotus leaves. China Max, in San Diego, California, recently started serving dim sum, and it is excellent. I know that at least one of the servers and cooks comes from a restaurant that I loved that got shut down a number of years ago -- San Choy. They made a hot coconut milk and pearl tapioca dessert that I have been trying to replicate at home for years without success (though lately I've gotten close!). I heard that it failed a health department inspection (ouch!), but man, the food was good. China Max's dim sum is just as good, and the atmosphere is great -- it's a pretty little place (on Convoy), so there isn't a lot of noise. Jasmine has pretty good dim sum, but the service has been crappy the last several times I've been there, and their big dining area is SO noisy. I've heard that China Max has started dim sum to compete with them, and once word gets around about them, I'm sure they'll do very well. 10% off this month to celebrate the grand opening of their dim sum service! If you're in the area I would highly recommend it.

Jan. 16th, 2005 @ 12:50 pm Coming to you live from San Jose, California!
Current Mood: cheerful
This blog entry is coming to you from Further Confusion, a convention in San Jose, California, USA. I am sitting in a corridor across from "Spencer's: For Steaks and Chops" and chatting with people about GoPets. Folk are quite interested -- and we have a request for a new pet type, an otter! I told them that it would be very cute, but where would they swim? It is a conundrum.

Man, I'm pretty tired. The dealer's room here is very cool -- I met a lot of artists I had no idea would be here. I also ran into some Internet friends I had never met in person before, which is always fun, to connect faces to nicknames/handles.

Jan. 10th, 2005 @ 02:50 pm First post of the year!
Current Mood: chipper
Hope everyone had a great New Year!

In other news, my pet parrot said a new word yesterday. He said his name, "Smeagol." We didn't name him -- I adopted him and he already had that name, according to his foster caretaker because he looked so "small and precious" when he was born. He also said something else yesterday that I think was "Whatcha doin' Mister Smeagol?", but I'm not sure... when he first says things they tend to be kind of hard to make out.
